At first glance, the world of commercial vessels and that of luxury yachts appear fundamentally different. However, a closer look reveals a surprising insight: both worlds operate on the same core principles.
At the same time, they differ in their respective challenges. What was once considered a contradiction has evolved into a new direction.
For DAMEN, we laid the foundation for a future-proof platform strategy on which, among others, the SeaXplorer Linie is based today.
Damen Shipyards is a Dutch family-owned company and one of the world’s leading shipbuilders. With more than 35 shipyards worldwide and around 12,000 employees, Damen delivers over 150 vessels annually — from tugboats and ferries to naval vessels. Known for its standardized shipbuilding concept based on stock production, Damen stands for short delivery times, high quality and innovative, sustainable maritime solutions for customers worldwide.
Revenue in 2024/2025 amounted to more than EUR 3 billion, with a record order book of more than EUR 10 billion.
Transformation of “Real” Ships
Damen Shipyards Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial vessels. From coast guard boats, cruise ships, ferries, fishing boats, tugs, cargo vessels, speedboats, frigates, tugs, offshore vessels and many others, Damen covers the entire spectrum of professional maritime transport. With revenue of EUR 2.5 billion and 55 companies worldwide, Damen is one of the major global players.
What mattered was the standardization of the manufacturing process and customer-specific customization based on a professional modular construction system. After an intensive analysis of existing vessel types, the following product diversifications were developed:
Three Model Lines – Three Different Worlds
Following an extensive market study and an intensive analysis of the relevant vessel types, three different product lines were developed jointly with the engineering team in Gorinchem under the leadership of BAMAT. Felix Buitendijk was brought in as architect.
Based on Long Range Vessels
Product Diversification I
Explorer Line
For the increasingly popular Explorer yachts, Damen’s Fisching Vessels were used as the basis. This vessel type is characterized by long range. 5,000 nautical miles and extreme seaworthiness.
Speeds Like the Coast Guard
Product Diversification II
Spirit Line
Die Damen’s fastest Patrol Boats were used as the basis for creating a modern exterior. These aluminium yacht types were positioned as a response to competitors with their GRP hulls.
Luxury Combined with Offshore Safety
Product Diversification III
Royality Line
The top-class Royality line is characterized by high luxury and professional engineering. These yachts are based on Damen’s Utility Vessels. With this yacht type, no wish remains unfulfilled.

The concept inspired by BAMAT – “The Best of Both Worlds” – can today be found again in the Damen SeaXplorer Serie. The SeaXplorer models are based on offshore vessels with certification for polar safety and absolute luxury features.

The joint venture between Damen and Van der Meijden was intended to start on the shipyard site of the former Tripartite project in Oostende.
How Small Images Convince
The presentation of our new concept took place in the late afternoon in Gorinchem and Kommer Damen, the chairman of the DAMEN Group, had already had a demanding day behind him. And then this graphic woke everyone in the room up again.
Standardization as a key factor. This concept unleashed a whole new dimension. Ultimately, it led to Damen Yachting.
